Round trip Flight with 2 One Way Fare
  • Q. What happens if I book a round trip flight and only use one way?

Please be advised that the tickets are supposed to be used in the same sequence as it is booked. Airlines do not allow passengers to use the ticket out of sequence. In case a passenger does not use any flight on the ticket, the airline marks them as no show and all of the subsequent flights are Canceled by the airline from the reservation and the ticket value is forfeited.

  • Q. Is ‘skiplagging’ the same as booking two one-way tickets instead of a round trip flight?

No, skiplagging is completely different from buying two one-way tickets. Skiplagging is not buying the direct flight from origin & destination as it can cost much higher fare so in that case a ticket can be purchased by selecting the final destination as a stopover point.  Skiplagging can basically skipping one leg of the ticket which can save more than a usual Round Trip ticket & whereas booking two-one way fares than a round trip sometimes can cost cheaper too. However, it entirely depends on the availability of the flight; anything can be cheaper.

For example :- A flight from New York to Chicago cost around $300 instead of purchasing a ticket at this cost a ticket from New York to Boston via Chicago can cost around $180. So it’s a huge savings.

  • Q. What are the benefits & risks of buying two one-way flights instead of a round-trip flight?

Whether it’s for vacationing or work tends to take you to places, if you’re someone who flies so frequently that you can conveniently call the aircraft and airport your second home, you must have booked or at least thought of going for two one-way flights rather than booking a round-trip flight. Well, you’re not alone; there are travelers galore who practice this often. However, as nearly everything comes with pros and cons, so does buying two one-way flight tickets instead of a round-trip flight.
How about you consider both the advantages and downsides ahead of the next time you make bookings?

    Benefits

    • Two one-way tickets help in saving a decent amount of bucks in comparison to a round-trip ticket. It is why travelers prefer two one-way flights tickets to a round-trip flight in the first place.
    • There are point-to-point airlines that do not sell flight tickets for a round-trip and instead sell tickets for each flight segment independently. You can’t hold them accountable if you’re unable to complete your ‘apparent’ round trip, in case your one flight leg gets canceled or delayed. Thus, it’s ideal to go for two one-way tickets when booking with a point-to-point air carrier.
    • If you’re flying domestically, your best bet is to go for two one-way flight tickets whereas, for international travel, a round-trip flight ticket is most probably a better deal.
    • Making changes to a round-trip ticket can break the bank. As the total cost of a round-trip flight ticket is more than a one-way flight ticket, it can be much more expensive for you to change the inbound flight ticket in comparison to a one-way flight ticket.

    Risks

    • The risk of losing your hard-earned money is pretty high if your departing flight gets canceled. The reason behind this is you can claim a refund on the canceled flight, but you can’t claim a refund on your return flight (or unrelated flight) that is dependent on the departing flight.
    • If the need be and you happen to cancel your trip consisting of two non-refundable one-way tickets rather than one round-trip ticket, you will have to bear two cancelation fees.
    • Several countries demand proof of intention to leave the country after the completion of the tour. It might get a bit troublesome for you to provide the same had your trip comprised two one-way fares rather than a round-trip fare.
    • Most air carriers offer round-trip flight tickets at discounted prices now and then throughout the year, which means that a one-way ticket will not come at the cost of half of the round-trip ticket. In such a scenario, a round-trip flight is definitely the way to go.

  • Q. What is skiplagging?

Travelers do everything in their hands to make their air travel as affordable as it can be. And, skiplagging is one of the ways to save pretty much a lot of dough. Popularly known as ‘hidden-city flight’ also, it is one of the commonly used airline booking ploys. Now, for those who’ve been living under a rock, skiplagging is wherein a passenger books a stopover flight when the stopover destination is indeed their actual destination, and they leave the airport there. It leads to them not completing the remaining segment of their itinerary and leaving the aircraft seat vacant on the remaining journey.

For a better understanding, say, you are looking to fly from Toronto to Vancouver, the flight for which costs $150 while another flight from Toronto to Seattle with a stopover at Vancouver comes at $100. Now, to save 50 bucks, you book yourself on the latter flight and exit from the airport in Vancouver. It means that the flight from Vancouver to Seattle will consequently fly with an empty seat, thanks to you. Of course, air carriers are averse to this practice by travelers for the obvious reason, which is, their flight flying with an empty seat because you were supposed to be sitting in it.

Abstain from skiplagging if you’ve baggage to check into the aircraft hold, for your luggage would be destined for the final destination. You can face severe repercussions, and the airline could end up offloading your checked bags upon realizing your absence on the remaining segment of the itinerary. Also, be mindful that the hidden-city ticketing is only doable on a one-way flight and not on a round-trip ticket. Once the air carrier finds out that you didn’t complete both the legs of your outbound flight, it will cancel your inbound flight.

Although skiplagging is not illegal, it doesn’t have a good reputation in the travel industry either, and it’s wise of you to not engage in such an endeavor. Assuming that it won’t be the last time you’re going to board a flight, the airlines have the upper hand. They can deplete your airline miles, take away your frequent flier status, cancel your membership or even go as far as banning you entirely from traveling in the future.
