Peru always tops the list of countries to visit in South America. And we have the culprit, Machu Picchu to blame for it. It is after all a 15th-century Incan city sitting pretty on the Andes Mountains. However, shift your focus to the capital, Lima and you’ll be beyond amazed. Home to profound history, vibrant culture and a laidback lifestyle, Lima has everything to give you the right travel feels. You can roam around the historic center at Plaza de Armas, dance with the wind at Lima’s Costa Verde and shop to your heart’s content at Miraflores District. Checkout what other treasures the city has for you. And, trust us, one look at the city is enough to urge you to book flight tickets to Lima.
Tourist Attractions
Miraflores District - Miraflores District is a perfect place to start exploring Lima and the reasons are umpteen. One of the reigning reasons is however, it being an upscale shopping location. The district is surrounded by commercial buildings that stand befriending the old colonial homes. And to top it all, it has ample green space to simply sit down and absorb the symphony of the city and the Pacific coast. So if you book cheap flights to Lima, come down here and walk along the beach, shop till you drop and savor the flavorsome Peruvian cuisine.
Huaca Pucllana - After you are done gobbling down the local food of Peru at Miraflores District, rent a car and drive to Huaca Pucllana. It is a pyramid-shaped temple containing seven platforms. Located in the center of Miraflores District, the temple is built completely in adobe and clay bricks. This historic site is important to Lima culture which dates between 200 AD and 700 AD. You can take a guided tour and explore the area where various artifacts are found. It also has a burial vault where human remains were discovered.
Museo de la Nacion - Museo de la Nacion is a major museum in Lima and is one of the best places to visit in order to learn about Peruvian culture. The museum covers all aspects of history and culture of the country. You can find archaeological artifacts and a series of art collections displayed on the temporary and permanent exhibits. It also has models of various archaeological sites such as Machu Picchu and a replica of the grave of the Lord Sipan.
Convento de San Francisco - It may not be as famous as Paris catacombs but Convento de San Francisco contains about 10,000 bones of people. And, that is why it got the recognition as Lima's first cemetery. You can take an underground tour of the church and walk through narrow hallways where skulls and bones are decked up on both the sides. The upper level of the church contains an impressive monastery. However, remember, the tour is not for claustrophobics as it has small passageways, low ceilings and doors.
When to Visit
