The town of Aguadilla on the northwestern tip of Puerto Rico may be small in size but it offers a plethora of attractions for vacationers. Famed for its white stretches of sun-kissed shores, it is visited by beach lovers in large numbers. It’s an adventure sport paradise with a bevy of activities including scuba diving, snorkeling and surfing for thrill seekers to indulge in. If spending a few languid days in a paradisiacal land away from the cacophony of life is what you seek, then forget about everything else and just get on a last-minute flight to Aguadilla.
Tourist Attractions
Crash Boat Beach – Although the town of Aguadilla and its surrounding areas are fringed by scenic shores, Crash Boat Beach has long been a favorite among locals and tourists. It is not merely a treat to the sore eyes but also has an intriguing history. Once the site of a military port, it was a jumping off point to rescue air crews. The remnants of the pier can still be seen here. Making it a must visit are the scores of food vendors and operators offering a plethora of adventure sports such as scuba diving.
Punta Borinquen Lighthouse – Get ready to click some amazing snaps and make your friends envious. Though not much of it is left, Punta Borinquen Lighthouse still makes for one of the best photo shoot locations you will find in Aguadilla. Built by the Spanish in the year 1889, the structure was left beyond repair after being hit by a major earthquake in 1918. The site commands stunning views of the surroundings and the never-ending North Atlantic Ocean. So, score a cheap flight ticket and prepare to be swept off your feet.
Survival Beach – Survival Beach is not easily accessible. It takes about a 15 minute hike through the woods and on rocky shores to reach here. But the weariness fades away in an instant once you get to witness the allure of Survival Beach. The seafront is marked with some really impressive rock formations carved by water and winds over the course of hundreds or perhaps thousands of years. If you are a surfer, then remember to carry your surfboard because the waves are just perfect for the sport.
Playa Peña Blanca – Playa Peña Blanca is Aguadilla’s hidden treasure. The crescent beach hides under a canopy of overhanging cliffs that act as a natural beach umbrella and protects you when the sun gets too hot. During a low tide, you can swim with the school of fishes found in the emerald waters near the shore.
When to visit
Aguadilla has a warm, tropical climate. The temperature does not vary much for most parts of the year. However, rainfall can be an obstacle in soaking the sun on its beaches or exploring the various other local points of interest. The months between December and April experience the least rainfall in this part of the world. So, most people plan their trip during this time. But visiting here during the peak season could have you spending a little extra on hotel bookings. And it’s the same when you are getting yourself a rental car.
Major Airport
Located at a distance of about 6 miles from the center of the town, Rafael Hernández Airport is the major airport serving Aguadilla.
